The south London bunnies are one of those bands that are pretty damn hard to categorise. They are very much a post punk ensemble with all the guitar driven hardcore fury that you’d expect. But also in the mix are Madaldn’s astonishing grime vocals which project her own lived experience and leave little to the imagination. They’ve teased us with a tune or two up until this point but this latest number really captures their intensity and it even comes with an atmospheric DIY promo video that fittingly manages to be seven shades of surreal & slightly disturbing. When queried about the subject matter Madaldn had this to say:
“When I wrote this song, it wasn’t literally about birth or death, or being high on K. For me it was about the emotional void I felt, which at first was a way of controlling myself, but the void took control of me. Trying to loose control, meant trying to allow feelings to come through, but I was being ovrtaken by this black hole of nothingness and darkness. The light at the end of the tunnel is the light of love, some might say God, the light switched on after a nightmare.
The references to drugs dripping to the floor, illustrates how ineffective they are in this scenario. People take some drugs to feel numb, to escape thier pain. I wanted to feel something ,rather then nothing. When you have no feelings sometimes the mind can ramble an conjure up all manor of nonsense, with nothing to pin it down, it can feel like sitting in a car without a steering wheel. No longer the director, just a passive observer without any emotion.
.The overall moral of the song- is not as some might think at face value. It is to be brave, be bold and not to live in fear of being hurt.”
They’ve got a few gigs coming up the next being this coming Saturday in Hastings. Check them out if you’re in the area. You wont be disappointed…
